Temporary stay Rotterdam: a practical plan for the gap between homes

Moving dates do not line up? Plan your temporary stay in Rotterdam around key handovers, essential luggage, daily routines and a possible change of dates.

The old keys need to go back on Friday. The new ones are not ready until next week. A temporary stay in Rotterdam can bridge that gap, but the useful part is not just finding a bed: it is planning how everyday life will keep working while your belongings are elsewhere.

Plan around three dates, not one

Write down the date you must leave your current home, the confirmed date you can enter the next one, and the date your furniture will arrive. These may be three different days. A renovation target or a verbal estimate is not the same as a confirmed handover. Keep the uncertain dates marked as uncertain when discussing accommodation.

Next, add the times. An apartment booked for the night is not necessarily accessible first thing that morning. At Alphabet Apartments, standard check-in is from 4pm. Free early check-in from 2pm is a direct-booking benefit, subject to availability and confirmation. Do not schedule your moving van around an early arrival that has not been agreed.

Separate what travels with you from what goes into storage

Pack for the temporary apartment as a short household reset, not a second full move. Keep clothes, medicines, chargers, work equipment and important documents with you. Put the things you use every morning in one accessible bag. For children, a familiar bedtime item may be more useful on the first night than another box of toys.

A furnished apartment gives you furniture to use during the gap; it does not automatically provide storage for your own furniture. Arrange storage and deliveries separately, and ask before bringing bulky items. Likewise, do not assume there is luggage storage before check-in or after check-out. Getting an answer in advance is much easier than solving that problem beside a loaded van.

Choose your Rotterdam base for an ordinary weekday

Make a list of the places you still need to reach: work, school, childcare, your storage unit and the property being renovated. Compare those journeys from the actual apartment address. The location that looks most convenient for sightseeing may not be the best choice when you need to visit a contractor before work.

Use the Rotterdam location map to explore the buildings, then check the apartment itself. Your booking confirmation is the reference for its precise address and arrival instructions. If you are bringing a car, confirm the parking arrangement for that location and distinguish overnight parking from a brief unloading stop. Neither should be assumed from a photograph of the street.

Protect a few routines instead of recreating the whole house

Think about breakfast, focused work and bedtime. A kitchen can make a normal breakfast possible; a separate bedroom may matter if one person works while another sleeps. Choose by the actual layout and the number of guests, not simply by the most appealing apartment name. Tell the team about any essential requirement before you book.

Ask about laundry arrangements, a baby cot or high chair, and pet approval if relevant. Do not assume every apartment has identical facilities or that requested extras are included. Decide which features are essential and which are merely convenient. That makes it easier to find a workable place without changing accommodation halfway through the move.

Agree what happens if the handover moves

Before booking, read the change and cancellation conditions attached to the rate you select. Ask how an extension would be handled and when you should contact the team. Extra nights are subject to availability and the applicable price; being in an apartment already does not reserve the following week.

Keep one person responsible for communicating updates. When a date changes, send the new requested check-out date and your booking reference as soon as possible, and wait for written confirmation. If the apartment cannot be extended, discuss alternatives rather than assuming another location or the same rate will be available.

Your moving-gap checklist

  • Record both key-handover dates, the furniture delivery date and any uncertainty.
  • Confirm check-in and check-out times before arranging transport.
  • Keep daily essentials separate from stored belongings.
  • Check the exact location, parking and the apartment’s essential facilities.
  • Read the booked conditions and agree how to request a date change.
  • Keep arrival instructions and the team’s contact details available on your phone.

Make the gap a stay, not another moving project

A temporary apartment works best when the important details are settled before moving day. Explore the Rotterdam apartments, then contact the team with your dates, guest count and any uncertainty around your new home. Availability and any special arrangements need to be confirmed for your booking.
